FLAIRBy Annette Frehling Will “athleisure” ever die? From the looks coming out of this season’s shows, the answer is no – certainly not soon. New retail data is showing leggings are rapidly outselling jeans. You can count on seeing a lot more spandex this holiday season and quite possibly less cropped, fl ared or skinny jeans. This news had me sadly wondering if the death of style was at hand, as I pictured in my mind the era of pink Juicy Couture sweatpants and Uggs. I’ve changed my focus on wishing an early end to women wearing stinky workout clothes all day as street wear. I’m now embracing a style which uses leggings as a base for the varied combinations that were so prevalent on the runways this season. Leggings can be a wonderful foundation for a beautiful oversized hand-knit sweater, under a caftan or under a trench coat or oversized jacket. Stretchy stirrup pants – an 80s take – are a fresh interpretation for leggings this season. I saw snap front leggings, constructed of cashmere, under tunics and boxy jackets on the Paris runways. I have to admit they looked chic and comfy. ON THE PRO SIDE I am now on the “pro” side of styling with leggings, but with a few stipulations. It has to be the right legging. They have to fi t and slightly, not overly, sculpt the body, creating a great silhouette. Wear your leggings with mandarin collar tunics, slouchy knits, oversized sweatshirts and button down shirts. Pair them with pointy fl ats and boots of any type or any of the new sneaker variations. Reimagining leggings now in a fashion style context is getting easier to embrace, but if your intention is solely comfort, you risk looking like you’re trumping through errands. In other words, pulling off the look requires thoughtful styling, a little irony and a lot of self awareness. After all, what else are you going to wear with this season’s puff y sleeved sweaters? Certainly not wide leg jeans. You need something slimmer to balance it out. Find leggings that are constructed in luxurious fabrics. Think cashmere. They just might be more chic than jeans.
